How to Find Groundwater Before Drilling

Before drilling a water well, the goal is to reduce uncertainty about aquifer depth, lithology, structures and water-bearing zones. VEXRAD ADR adds a non-invasive, depth-referenced subsurface evidence layer from the surface.

SHORT ANSWER

Geophysics can help rank where to drill for groundwater — but it cannot guarantee water yield.

The strongest groundwater programme combines hydrogeology, existing borehole information and geophysical measurements. ADR can contribute a Virtual Borehole interpretation of subsurface changes with depth, while drilling, logging, sampling and pump testing remain the decisive tests.

GROUNDWATER EXPLORATION

Finding water is a geological problem, not simply a search for a blue anomaly.

Aquifer setting

Understand lithology, weathering, faults, fractures and the units capable of storing or transmitting groundwater.

Depth & continuity

Investigate where water-related responses occur with depth and whether interpreted horizons continue across the site.

Well decisions

Use multiple evidence layers to rank where monitoring, test drilling or production-well investigation should focus.

VEXRAD WORKFLOW

SCAN → INTERPRET → RANK → DRILL → PUMP TEST

ADR measurements can contribute conductivity-, dielectric- and boundary-related information to a depth model. A hydrogeological interpretation then combines those responses with geology and existing site data.

WHAT CAN BE INVESTIGATED?

From water-table indicators to candidate aquifer zones

Where is the water table?Coincident changes in multiple ADR parameters may support an interpreted water-table horizon.Monitoring boreholes / piezometers.
Where are water-bearing structures?Depth changes, boundaries and conductive/dielectric responses may help map candidate zones.Drilling, logging and hydraulic testing.
What is the likely water quality or yield?ADR responses may support relative fluid/zone classification in calibrated settings.Sampling and pump testing remain essential.
CASE EVIDENCE

Finland: a surface-built groundwater model

At an active mine in Finland, VEXRAD’s legacy ADR dataset used 15 Virtual Boreholes and profile scans to interpret a coherent water table at roughly 75 m and a step-down toward the pit. VEXRAD currently reports those water findings as Candidate because the interpretation was not drill-confirmed. That distinction matters: it demonstrates the mapping workflow without overstating validation.

ADR does not guarantee a productive water well.
Well yield, water chemistry, transmissivity and sustainable abstraction require hydrogeological testing. The purpose of pre-drill geophysics is to improve where and why those tests are carried out.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions technical teams ask

How can you find groundwater before drilling?

Hydrogeologists combine geology, topography, existing wells and geophysical measurements to identify likely aquifers, structures and water-bearing zones before test drilling.

Can ADR detect groundwater?

ADR can measure subsurface electromagnetic responses that may be influenced by water content, conductivity, dielectric behaviour and geological boundaries. These responses require geological interpretation and project-specific validation.

Can geophysics tell me how much water a well will produce?

Not reliably on its own. Sustainable yield and transmissivity need drilling and hydraulic or pump testing. Geophysics can help rank candidate locations before those intrusive tests.

Can ADR distinguish fresh and saline water?

Conductivity- and dielectric-related responses may support fluid classification in suitable calibrated settings, but water chemistry should be confirmed by sampling.

Does a Virtual Borehole replace a water borehole?

No. It is a pre-drill interpretation designed to improve borehole siting and the subsurface hypothesis that drilling then tests.
